When it comes to wedding day fashion, reception dresses are quickly becoming a must-have for brides looking to elevate their celebration style. Reception dresses are worn for the second half of the wedding and are less formal than traditional wedding gowns. As a wedding photographer who loves fashion and styling, I have had so much fun photographing my couples’ second looks. Whether it’s a sparkly mini dress or a sleek satin maxi, my couples have truly pulled out all the stops for their reception dresses this year.
Reception dresses first entered the wedding scene as a practical solution for brides who couldn’t comfortably dance in their wedding gowns. Whether their initial dress was a dramatic ballgown or a structured mermaid silhouette, the second dress offered freedom of movement. However, as reception dresses have become more popular, they’ve become more of a fun addition to the wedding day rather than a necessity.
I find that taking time away from the reception to change is a great candid photo opportunity for the couple and even gives us an opportunity for a second round of portraits. And for some couples, it’s a chance to wear a second designer they’ve always loved or simply don a dress that will sparkle under the dance floor lights. No matter your reason, opting for a reception dress allows you to be more comfortable while showcasing another stunning look on your big day!
One thing I love about reception dresses is the ability to make a major fashion statement. Some of my favorite wedding reception dresses this year have been from incredible designers such as Lee Petra Grebenau, Oscar de la Renta, Danielle Frankel, and Christopher John Rogers. These big names pack a major punch in a small dress with incredible textures and shapes. And for couples looking to make a truly bold statement, I love second looks that incorporate color. From silver and gold to blue or red, there are so many great options that make you stand out on the dance floor.
I also adore when couples break away from the traditional mini dress and explore other options, such as tailored pantsuits or flowing maxi dresses. And if you have time, consider changing your hair and accessories for your second look as well! There’s nothing better than a complete transformation when you reenter the party.
In addition to reception dresses, I’ve seen such a transformation in the attire that couples wear to their pre-wedding events. From rehearsal dinners to showers and even welcome parties, couples are really raising the bar. I love seeing couples in colorful, bold patterns and designer silhouettes. Even the grooms have really elevated their style with colorful suits, shoes, and accessories.
